*Construction of self-aligning ball bearings
The self-aligning ball bearing consists of an outer ring, an inner ring, a rolling element, a cage that accommodates the rolling element, and possible seals, which protect the rolling element and lubricant from contamination. Their design allows them to compensate for up to three degrees of misalignment between the shaft and housing components. The low friction inside the bearings will enable them to operate at higher speeds while generating much less heat than other bearings.
1. Outer ring
The outer ring of the bearing is a smooth spherical surface with no raceway. Due to the shape of the ring, the bearing can move slightly inside it, thereby adjusting for misalignment.
2. Inner circle
The inner ring of the self-aligning bearing consists of two raceways, which fix the ball and cage.
3. Rolling element and retainer
The retainer and inner ring fix the rolling elements of the self-aligning ball bearing in place. Due to the loose structure between the ball and the inner and outer rings, the friction force and frictional heat are both low. Usually, the cage is made of stamped steel, reinforced fiberglass, or machined brass.

3. Installation of self-aligning bearings
Tight sleeves are commonly used for installing self-aligning ball bearings.
To install these bearings correctly, please follow the following steps:
(1) Packaging with protective film can prevent external influences from interacting with components during transportation. Ensure to remove these films before installing the bearings.
(2) Apply engine oil or grease to the outer surface of the bearing.
(3) Use oil to lubricate the adapter.
(4) Slightly open the adapter and use the expander tool to slide it onto the shaft.
(5) After the adapter is in the correct position, place the bearing on the locking sleeve. To place the bearings in the correct position, if the shaft has threads, use nuts; If not, please use a bearing pusher kit or a small mallet.
(6) Ensure that the bearing can rotate on the outer ring after being in place. It should not be possible to rotate, but it should be possible to rotate freely.
(7) By removing the nut, placing the washer, and reinstalling the nut, lock the bearing in place with a locking washer.
Attention: If the locking sleeve is loose or not fully fixed in place, the inner ring of the locking sleeve will start to rotate. As a result, excessive friction may occur between these three components, leading to damage to the shaft, adapter, and bearings.
*Selection criteria for self-aligning bearings
The selection of self centering bearings is mainly based on the consideration of possible centering problems, as well as the application speed, load type, load size, tolerance, and bearing size.
1. Misalignment
Bearings with self-aligning ability are usually necessary.
When there may be misalignment of the shaft, self-aligning ball bearings are a good solution. Please remember that most self-aligning bearings can only handle misalignment of three degrees or less. Any deviation above this requires more customized bearings.
2. Speed
Compared to traditional bearings, self-aligning bearings can operate at higher speeds. For high-speed applications, self-aligning bearings are an excellent choice. However, lubrication and bearing size are also factors that affect speed. Therefore, it is also important to consider the speed, lubrication type, and load requirements of the machine. The operating speed of grease lubrication is slower than that of oil lubrication.
3. Load
Automatic self-aligning bearings are suitable for radial loads, but they are not suitable for axial loads due to their small contact angle. When choosing bearings, it is important to take this into consideration.
4. Sealing type and lubrication
If the bearings have open or shielded seals, lubrication procedures may be required. Otherwise, sealed bearings are usually pre lubricated.
